Rugs

How do you pick a rug for your space? This is one of the hardest things to do because there’s so much to consider — the color of your floors, the material of your floors, what room you’re decorating, etc. How to pick the right size rug? Even harder. But don't worry, we’ve got you covered.

First thing’s first, see rugs for their benefits. For example, if a room feels cold and unwelcoming a nice used or vintage rug can really warm it up! And if the room feels like it just isn’t cohesive, this is a great way to tie the room together. All you have to do is wisely choose the color of the rug, pattern, design, shape, and size.

Rules are meant to be broken, but we want to give you some level of guideline. Rugs should let there be around 18 inches of floor surrounding the perimeter so the space looks balanced. You can place a rug between two sofas, under a modular sofa, opt for a smaller rug for a small living space, or use it to anchor a large, open area space.

As far as textures, there are so many to consider. Wool rugs are great because they’re resistant to stains and extra durable. If you’re looking for a rug that won’t get dirty and will well-suit a high-traffic area, like a hallway rug, foyer rug, kitchen rug or entryway rug, definitely opt for a wool rug. And these rugs are cool because they come in even more styles, like hand-knotted, hand-loomed, etc.

Natural fiber rugs are also a great option and sustainable as they’re made from organic materials like plants, grasses etc. They’re neutral and indoor only. Only downside? Really not great for bathrooms or outdoor use, but apart from that place one of these anywhere else!

Hair-on-Hide Rugs: Hair-on-hide rugs are a contemporary style of rug, featuring a blend of stitched-together cowhide, which has been glued to a cotton-latex backside and then stitched together on all four sides. Hair-on-hide rugs must be vacuumed and rotated regularly to ensure that it holds up over time. Additionally, hair-on-hide rugs are best for low-traffic areas.

Other rugs include cotton, hide, synthetic and silk, and vintage.

Whether you’re going for a small rug, area rug, shag rug, round rug, or rug runner, don’t forget to add one of these to your space. Our favorite rug brands include West Elm, Restoration Hardware, Cb2, nuLoom, Anthropologie, and Pottery Barn.

Shop rugs of all styles across the United States, including in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, San Diego, Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Austin, Phoenix, San Jose, New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.
